Bermuda might be most known for it’s obscure, pink-sand beaches, but there is more to do on the island than lay in the sun. In fact, there are some unique things to do in Bermuda that might even surprise you! We’re calling all art and cultural enthusiasts here, because the art scene in Bermuda is like nowhere else.
Beautiful Bermuda Art Museums and Galleries
There are a few places you have to check out while you’re in Bermuda, especially if you’re looking for some unique things to do. Bermuda art and cultural history is so rich and vibrant, you just can’t miss it.
Bermuda Clayworks
Located in the Royal Naval Dockyard, the Bermuda Clayworks is a great stop to see master potters at work. Visitors can also purchase handmade pottery pieces created by local potters on-site. The gallery is also known as Jon Faulkner’s Gallery, as he is the mastermind behind the gallery’s beginnings. There are full-time resident artists here as well as international ceramists creations. Perhaps some of the most unique pieces available to purchase are the house designs or handmade house plaques. Tip: You can customize these or ask for a different image on the plaques!
If you’re looking to get your hands busy, you can also visit the “Paint your own Pottery studio.” Visit any day from 9am to 6pm, pick out a pottery item of your choice and paint it yourself!
The Bermuda Arts Center
Founded in 1984 by a local artist collective, the Bermuda Arts Centre is undoubtedly a pillar in the artistic community of Bermuda. The BACD is home to a large print work gallery and hosts a variety of workshops. If you’re lucky, you’ll surely catch a glimpse of one of the many working artists throughout the galleries. Fun fact: the primary resident at the Bermuda Arts Center is a black and white cat known as Little Guy!
Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art
Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is home to an incredible collection of works by major artists including Georgia O’Keefe, Charles Demuth and Albert Gleizes. Many of the 1,500+ pieces are depictions of the beautiful island in the eyes of the artist, including landscapes, cultural heritage and the warmth of Bermudian people.
The museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am until 4 pm. It only costs $5 for general admission, and is free for children under 12 years old. Be sure to check out the Arrowroot Museum Shop and Gallery on your way out, for featured artwork as well as crafts, books, calendars and other gift items.
Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery
The largest and most diverse gallery on the island, the Bermuda Society for the Arts is committed to bringing new art to Bermuda. It is the oldest established arts organization on the island, formally known as “Society of Artists in Bermuda.” Formed all the way back in 1952 by 25 art enthusiasts, the Society has grown strong in influence. The exhibitions change every three weeks, so there is always something unique and fresh to see. Bermuda Heritage Museum
Opening in 1998, the Bermuda Heritage Museum displays the history of slavery in Bermuda from pre-emancipation to now. The building itself is a historic marvel, as it once housed an order of the Friendly Society, giving a helping hand to slaves after emancipation. Located in the Town of St. George, there are many artifacts and photographs that memorialize events like the 1959 Theatre Boycott, which ended segregation in Bermuda. It is also a stop on the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, which traces Bermuda’s legacy of slavery. The Bermuda Heritage Museum is the island’s only black history museum.
Bermuda Transport Museum
Amongst the many unique things to do and see in Bermuda is the Bermuda Transport Museum. Spend one to two hours here and see all the amazing vintage vehicle exhibits.
