1. Napa Valley, California
Although you may only be able to visit 2-3 wineries per day, Napa Valley has over 275 wineries to choose from! This year-round spot offers more than three dozen different grape varieties and prides itself on their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Keep in mind that fall is the most popular time of year, but any season is great for a trip. A few must-visit locations are HALL St. Helena and Pine Ridge Vineyards.
2. Texas Hill Country, Texas
Many of these varieties thrive in the Texas heat and with 50 unique wineries to choose from, you’ll find exactly the pair you’re looking for. The Mediterranean-style wines are most popular, and the king of grapes is the Tempranillo. If you’re a fan of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandels, this is the place to be. Visit late March to early May for the perfect sip and be sure to stop at Signor Vineyards, Duchman Winery, and Pedernales Cellars in Stonewall.
3. Willamette Valley, Oregon
The cooler climates of Oregon add a unique flavor to their ever-popular Pinot Noirs. Here, Pinot Noir accounts for 72% of grape acreage while Pinot Gris and Chardonnay come close behind. Enjoy a tasting at Alloro Vineyard or Bells Up Winery – try visiting in the wintertime. The most popular and crowded time is between Memorial Day and Labor Day when the vineyards are awakening.
4. Lake Chelan, Washington
Another popular spot for Pinot Noir is the Lake Chelan Wine Country. September is the ideal time to visit when it’s less windy and cold. The Walla Walla Vintners, Treveri Cellars, and Daven Lore Winery are top spots for tours and tastings.
5. Northern Virginia
If you’re looking for Chardonnay or Cabernet Franc, Virginia should be on your list. Their most popular grape is the Viognier, and they’re known for their delicious red wines. Take your time when visiting Ashton Creek Vineyard while enjoying the beautiful countryside scenery and delicious grapes. Try visiting in October, which is Virginia Wine Month, when the weather is a bit cooler and fall foliage is at its best!
